Vancity Combines EMC Captiva and Microsoft SharePoint to Accelerate Processing Time 50-Percent

EMC Corporation today announced that Vancity, Canada’s largest credit union, is achieving significant productivity gains—speeding processing time by 50-percent—and cost savings since deploying EMC Captiva, an enterprise-class capture solution for automatic classification, indexing, extraction and routing of business content.

Vancity was founded in 1946, and manages more than $14 billion in assets for greater than 415,000 members throughout Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, Squamish and Victoria in Canada. Looking to replace its aging FileNet document management system, Vancity required a capture solution that complimented Microsoft SharePoint ECM, which is its repository for content. EMC Captiva was the best solution enabling Vancity to significantly reduce manual data entry and document preparation time without adding staff or resources.

Using Captiva, Vancity personnel can scan mixed batches of structured, semi-structured and unstructured documents within a single flow. By leveraging automated document recognition technologies, Vancity has been able to speed up pre-scanning, document preparation times by up to 50-percent. Additionally, intelligent data extraction has reduced manual data entry for all documents, even the semi-structured and unstructured documents. The company processes more than 500,000 documents, representing more than one million pages annually.

Denise Lau, Manager, Workplace Technologies Inventure Solutions Inc | A Vancity Company, said, “We saw significant productivity benefits right away. Over time, the system has enabled us to establish best practices that have helped raise processing efficiencies across the company.  With EMC’s enterprise-class solution we are achieving levels of operational efficiency and gaining cost savings with an anticipated return on our investment within two years.”

“We continue to see a large number of customers update and consolidate aging capture systems with EMC Captiva. Customers are able to reduce their operational costs and extend their capture capabilities throughout their entire organization, while moving capture closer to the front office to further reduce operating costs and streamline business processes,” said Paul O’Brien, Vice President of Information Access, Information Intelligence Group at EMC. “EMC is pleased to work with Vancity on its enterprise capture environments.”
