Pentaho Agile BI Amps Up Leading Energy Firms

Power Costs, Inc. combines Pentaho and QlikTech to analyze P&L in near-time

Orlando, FL, – August 19, 2010 – Pentaho Corporation open source business intelligence (BI) leader, today announced that Power Costs, Inc., (PCI) the leading global provider of energy supply management software has successfully deployed the Pentaho BI Suite Enterprise Edition integrated with QlikView at three energy companies. The joint solution allows Power Costs' customers to mine massive amounts of data quickly to help improve their Day Ahead and Real-Time operational Profit and Loss (P&L).

Power Costs provides asset optimization solutions to many of the leading power generation and trading companies in the world. The PCI GSMS (Generation Supply Management System) generates 5-10 GB of data a month for each customer which is critical to monitoring their P&L. Prior to using the Pentaho and QlikView business Intelligence solution, Power Costs found it difficult to analyze the large amounts of data and quickly respond to user needs of ad-hoc vertical and horizontal data drilling to find root causes of P&L leakage.

After evaluating several BI options including SAP (Business Objects), IBM (Cognos) and Microsoft BI products, Power Costs selected Pentaho BI Suite Enterprise Edition because of Pentaho's comprehensive feature set, rapid and easy integration with PCI GSMS and exceptional value. The PCI GSMS solution is powered by the Pentaho BI Suite, and supplemented with the analyzer solution from QlikView. A major component of the Pentaho BI Suite is Pentaho Data Integration, the industry’s most widely deployed data integration offering, which helps move data from the Power Costs transactional system to a data warehouse. Power Costs also leverages Pentaho Reporting, Dashboards and Analyzer tools for additional analysis and visualization. The result is a frictionless process for creating, delivering and consuming relevant business data that drives close collaboration between BI application developers and end-users.

"The Agile BI capabilities of Pentaho Data Integration completely streamlined the way we interact with our business users to build data marts that enable them to create relevant reports," said David Nilsson, vice president of product management, Power Costs, Inc. "It has allowed us to move the data closer to the end users, creating seamless collaboration, reducing time and difficulty in creating reports, and giving a faster time to value in allowing our customers to make faster decisions that impact their business."

"The Pentaho BI Suite was developed from the ground up as an open framework so that it could easily integrate into any project," said Richard Daley, founder and CEO, Pentaho Corporation. "The unified BI development environment enables companies like Power Costs, Inc. to take advantage of our full feature functionality within days, at a fraction of the cost of proprietary solutions."
