Fundación Telefonica Uses Pentaho to Manage its Program against Child Labor

Pentaho Business Analytics helps to take further steps to eradicate child labor

Pentaho Corporation announced that Proniño, Fundación Telefónica’s charitable social action program, has implemented Pentaho Business Analytics to explore and visualize its data in real time and help define targeted measures for eradicating child labor in Latin America.

Since the program started, the number of children involved has grown exponentially and reached 107,602 by 2008. With this growth, the old analytics tools reached their limits, making it almost impossible to track the progress of each child or evaluate the success of the program.  Accenture Foundation, through its Pro-Bono CSR program recommended that Fundación Telefónica implement Pentaho Business Analytics. In workshops more than 400 social workers from thirteen countries in Latin America, all non-technical users, were trained to work with Pentaho.

The reactions from users have been very positive, as Pentaho allows them to explore and visualize their data in real time, helping them to better understand the context in which child labor arises, discovering new and unknown challenges that and take better measures that are better adapted to real needs to eradicate child labor.  One social worker commented, “this is like a dream come true."

With Pentaho Business Analytics, social workers can keep track of each child attended by the program, currently at nearly 240,000. The reports generated with Pentaho allow contributing to the partnership with governments to identify where problems occur and propose alternatives to eradicate them.

Matias Figueroa, Program Coordinator at Fundación Telefónica Proniño says, "Pentaho Business Analytics allows Fundación Telefónica and its partners to manage the program more efficiently and it helps the social workers to take better suited measures to eradicate child labor."

"It is gratifying to see how open source technology gives charities like Proniño access to business analytics tools normally only accessible to large enterprises,” said Davy Nys, Regional Vice President EMEA & APAC, Pentaho. “Thanks to Pentaho’s intuitive interface, social workers without deep technical or analytical skills can explore and visualize their data and create and share reports."
